There is a big difference between renting a house and owning a home.
When you rent, and the sink leaks, you call the landlord. You don’t care that much. You didn’t buy the paint. When you own, you fix the sink yourself because it’s yours. You take pride in it.
In business, we have too many renters. People who just do the minimum required to not get fired. They treat the company code, the customers, and the culture like a rental car.
You want Psychological Ownership. You want people who act like owners. Here is how to get it.
Give Them the “What,” Let Them Figure Out the “How”
Micromanagement kills ownership. If I tell you exactly how to do your job, you’re just a robot.
Tactical Move: Set the goal, then step back. Let them figure out the path. When they choose the path, they care about the result.
Let Them Put Their Stamp On It
It sounds small, but it matters.
Tactical Move: Let the team name their projects. Let them decorate their space. When a developer names a tool “The Beast,” they care about how it performs. It’s their baby.
Show Them the Money (Impact)
People disconnect when they feel like a cog in a machine.
Tactical Move: Show them the scoreboard. Did we save a client money? Did we get a new contract? Show the individual how their work helped the team win. When they see the impact, they feel invested.
Technology has zero pride. It doesn’t care if it breaks. Your people do. Unleash that pride.
